Big Shout Outs and Pep Talk

Yes, it is Labor Day weekend and I am thinking about school! Just a quick SHOUT OUT to Coach Stephens who has been a great ROCK for me!
As I have transitioned into my new role at CO, he has also been doing a great job with the morning announcements and discipline issues.
All of you have worked hard connecting with kids and doing a lot of preventive measures so that things don't end up in the office. I APPRECIATE ALL OF YOU!

Also, a shout out to Linda Haynes who has taken a role in making sure things rock along at the best little school ever!

The pic I posted is important. Our system is going through many changes. Remember, if we don't change anything, we will be stuck. You and I are a part of that change. I will always have your best interest at heart with every decision I make in my new position. Please don't forget to include me when you are looking for folks to read or help with special events.

My work life will never feel as good as it has felt for the last 71/2 years. Embrace this transition, hold your heads high, and be open to new and exciting possibilities. I love every one of you!

Don't forget Diane's Happy Basket!

Let's show some love to one of the hardest working ladies I know! Any pampering items you want to send. Basket will be at first faculty meeting in annex 1.

Also, 2nd grade will be hosting this meeting with breakfast snacks, so save some room.

All should be gathered at 8 to get this school year started!

Staying Connected

Just wanted to let everyone know that Teresa Whitten had a double mastectomy on Thursday, July 15 after cancer cells were found on one side. She is at home and doing well. She said she was  feeling fine. I talked with her and asked if I could share this information. She said yes, but did not want to add to people's burdens that they were already carrying.

If you want to call her, the numbers are:
home: 256-761-9476
cell: 256-493-0781

Her mailing address is:
Teresa Whitten
110 Higgins Street
Talladega, Alabama 35160

Selena's dad also had a situation with his heart, but is at home resting. We all know how much she loves her daddy! Please keep her in your thoughts, too. I don't think she would mind a call to check on her.

FREE and Great PD Opportunity

The University of Montevallo Inservice Center still has a good bit of space in our ARI Literacy Development Re-Tooling for K-5 sessions that is being held on July 21-23 (3-day session) at the University of Montevallo Regional In-Service Center in Pelham.  Just sharing in case someone is still looking for some FREE and GREAT professional development this summer.  You will get a participant notebook.

Description:  The goal of the three day session is to gain understanding of the developing proficient reader. By understanding the ARI conceptual framework, components of reading, formative assessment, and ELA standards, teachers will become better equipped to address the critical needs of readers in the classroom.  Participants should bring pencils, pens, and a laptop or tablet with Internet capability.

Interested participants should register in STI-PD using PD Title Number UMINS15-20.
NOTE:  Although there are multiple sessions listed under this number, you should register for the correct grade band (K-2 or 3-5) for the July 21-23 sessions only.  The others are for specific school systems.

Another PD Opportunity... Pass it on......!

Talents Unlimited
June 29, 9:00-3:00
Lincoln Professional Development Center, 901,9th Avenue North, Birmingham, 35204
STIPD #UABRIC1023

Research suggests that children possess potential for many kinds of talents (thinking abilities) which are important to success in the classroom as well as in the world of work.  In addition to the Academic, these Talents include:  Productive Thinking, Communication, Forecasting, Decision Making and Planning.   When students apply the five critical and creative talents to learn academic content, the processes require students to go beyond memorization and think about factual information in more challenging ways.  This one day workshop will introduce you to the Talents Unlimited approach.  It will include an overview of the 6 talents and it demonstrates the correlation between Talents and CCRS, STEM and Aspire.  Learn to identify and nurture the multiple thought process talents of ALL students.  This approach does not take the place of learning academic skills but rather enhances the learning process.  Come and learn about Talents Unlimited.

What do you think about this?

The common word would be LEADERS and it goes with the motto. Simple and true. It would be easy to build grade level themes around it. Just use leader somewhere....
